A life of family and Fashion
Living in 1967 Ukraine, Nina Sitkovetsky began a search for a career to use her passion of knitting. Nina found an opportunity as a home economics teacher, where she would develop her skills, along with teaching others her craft.
In 1978, the Sitkovetsky family came to America in search of greater opportunities. Using her experience, Nina was able to get her first job at a knitting shop. At the same time, she went to school to learn English, and volunteered teaching the elderly to knit.
As a few years had passed, in 1981 with advice from her younger brother Joseph, she made the decision to start her own business. The business was named Nina’s Knitting, where she sold yarn, taught knitting lessons and made pieces of clothing by hand.
By 1985-1986 Nina and her daughter Elaine Vinikoor had an idea for a new direction. Elaine, from childhood had a talent for design. Nina had always been developing Elaine’s technical skills in sewing, knitting, and pattern making. Together they invested into the technology needed to start a clothing line of their own.
1987 Elana Collection Inc. was created and first introduced at New York Boutique Show. Elana was an instant hit. Throughout the coming years, Elana expanded across the country. From the beginning Elana has proudly been a family owned and American made brand continued by Elaine and her children.
“To make a long story short, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.”-Nina
